Around 130 people attended a timely panel on the refugee crisis in Europe hosted by the Center for European Studies and the Bob Graham Center for Public Service in the Pugh Hall Ocora. Four CES faculty discussed various aspects of the refugee crisis in front of a packed audience of UF students, professors and members of the Gainesville community. Maria Stoilkova discussed the infamously complicated asylum laws that have flummoxed refugees and bureaucrats alike. Next Esther Romeyn explored border regimes within the European Union, focusing primarily on Frontex and the Schengen zone. Alin Ceobanu next examined xenophobia in Europe, addressing such issues as the billboard campaign in Hungary. Finally, Alice Freifeld discussed the major refugee crisis that Europe faced immediately following the Second World War.
